A guide to creating place name cards

Whether you’re hosting a wedding, party, corporate event, gala dinner, or any other special occasion, having personalised place name cards helps add a touch of class.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to creating place name cards.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Select Your Card Size and Style

Place name cards are typically 90 x 90mm in size, creased in half so they stand up on their own when folded. We also offer 105mm x 120mm if you’d like them slightly larger, on two types of card stock:

  • 350gsm Silk Card: This thick, smooth card has a slight finish, making it perfect for vibrant, high-quality prints.

  • 350gsm Uncoated Card: This card has a natural paper finish, ideal for a classic, elegant look.

2. Supply Your List of Names

To get started, you’ll need to provide a list of names and the style you’d like for your place cards. Here are two options:

  • List of Names: Most people prefer to give us an Excel list with the names in two columns (first name and surname) along with a template or description of the desired style.

  • PDF File: If you have a specific design in mind, you can supply your own PDF file. The file should be correctly sized with a 3mm bleed. For 90 x 90mm cards, the PDF should measure 96 x 96mm.  If you need help with a design, Canva is easy to use.

3. Order Online

Once you’ve worked out the total number of place cards you need, select all the options you’d like and add them to your basket. During the checkout process, you will be prompted to upload your file and provide any special instructions.

4. Proof Approval

We don’t print anything automatically. We’ll review your order and email you a PDF proof showing the final layout as it would print. This step allows you to check for any mistakes and ensure everything is as you envisioned. Once you approve the PDF proof, we’ll proceed with printing.

5. Printing and Delivery

After you approve the PDF proof, we’ll get started on printing your place name cards. All cards are printed in full colour at excellent quality, whether your design is in colour or black & white. We use FSC-certified paper from mixed and renewable resources, ensuring an eco-friendly choice. Delivery typically takes 1 working day, but may vary depending on your location within the UK.

File Types and Specifications

  • Preferred File Type: A PDF with ‘press quality’ settings, crop marks, and 3mm bleed.  Here is a our guide to supplying artwork.

  • Other Accepted Formats: JPEG, TIFF, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher.

  • PDF Requirements for Custom Files: For 90 x 90mm cards, the PDF should measure 96 x 96mm. For 105 x 120mm cards, the PDF should measure 111 x 126mm. We need one name per page, so if you have 200 names, the PDF should have 200 pages.

Final Tips

  • Double-Check Your List: Ensure there are no mistakes and that all names are formatted correctly (e.g., starting with capital letters).

  • Avoid Folding Lines: There’s no need to include a folding line in your design, as the cards will be creased for folding during production.
